Small group counseling can be helpful when students are experiencing a difficult situation. It allows for them to gain support and receive feedback from peers their own age. It also helps them to see they are not alone in what they are feeling and experiencing. As the leader, I facilitate activities for discussion and help students make connections that will help them learn healthy coping skills. Small counseling groups cover a wide variety of topics, including resiliency, social skills, friendship, managing emotions, grief, and changing families.
Small Counseling Group Details
Small group counseling typically lasts 6 - 8 weeks. We meet during school hours in my office or in the classroom. Groups are either held at students' lunch period or during instructional time with permission from the teacher.
If I or a teacher invite your child to group counseling, it does not mean that your child has a serious problem or has done something wrong. I am merely bringing together a few students that are experiencing similar issues and we are working together as a group to learn helpful strategies to cope.
Small group counseling is not just for students experiencing emotional or personal issues. I also work with students in small groups to help them learn better organization and homework strategies or leadership skills.
Parent or guardian permission is required.

Confidentiality
I will share with parents or guardians general themes and issues discussed in the group, but I will keep most of what we talk about confidential. I encourage each student to share with you the details of what they learned and talked about while in group. They will bring home a folder containing all the activities they have worked on during our group time together.
